7 Common Issues That Cause Your AC Not Cooling Properly

Is your AC not cooling like it’s supposed to? You set the thermostat low, the unit kicks on, but the air coming out feels barely cool or not cool at all. 

Before you assume the worst or book a service call, there’s a good chance the problem is something simple.

Reason #1: Thermostat issues

Before you do anything else, check your thermostat. Don’t just glance at it. You really have to check it.

Make sure it’s set to Cool, not just Fan. You’d be surprised how often someone changes it and forgets. Also, double-check the set temperature. If it’s 77°F and your room is already 76°F, the AC won’t kick in.

If your thermostat runs on batteries, swap them out. A low battery might not kill the screen completely, but it can mess with signals. If it’s hardwired and the screen is blank, there might be a power issue.

Reason #2: Dirty air filter

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, with 88% of U.S. homes using air conditioning, even small issues like a clogged filter or low refrigerant can lead to big energy waste and higher utility bills.

A clogged filter blocks airflow and makes your AC work harder. That can lead to warm air, weak airflow, frozen coils, or higher energy bills.

Pull the filter out and hold it up to the light. If it’s coated in gray dust and you can’t see through it, replace it. Most homes need a new filter every 1–3 months, especially with pets or allergies.

It’s an easy fix but easy to forget. And it affects everything else in the system.

Reason #3: Frozen evaporator coil

Weak airflow or no cold air? Check for ice on the indoor coil or copper pipes. You might even see water pooling as it melts.

Frozen coils usually mean one of three things: a dirty filter, closed vents, or low refrigerant.

Turn off the AC and run just the fan for a few hours to thaw it. Then check your filter, open all vents, and restart. If it ices up again, you’ll likely need a pro.

Reason #4: Low refrigerant

When your AC runs nonstop but never cools the house, low refrigerant is a likely cause. It’s what absorbs heat. Without enough of it, the system can’t cool.

Watch for these signs:

  • The air feels cool, not cold
  • AC runs way too long
  • Ice forms on the coil or lines
  • Hissing or bubbling sounds near the outdoor unit

You can’t do this with a DIY fix. A tech needs to find the leak, seal it, and recharge the system. Just refilling without a repair is a short-term patch because it’ll leak again.

Reason #5: The Outdoor unit is not working or is clogged

The outdoor unit needs airflow to release heat. If it’s covered in leaves, dirt, or too close to a fence, cooling suffers fast.

Take a look. Clear away debris and rinse the coils with a garden hose (no pressure washer). Make sure the fan is spinning. If it’s not, check your breaker panel. It could be a tripped breaker, a bad capacitor, or a failed fan motor.

Start simple. If it still won’t run, it’s time to call a technician.

Reason #6: Electrical Issues or a Bad Capacitor

No sound, no fan, no sign of life from the outdoor unit? It could be an electrical problem.

Start with your breaker box. Sometimes, the AC trips the breaker, especially during power surges or extreme heat. Flip it off and on again to reset.

Still nothing? The capacitor might be dead. It’s a small part that helps start the fan and compressor. When it fails, the unit just sits there, silent.

Note that capacitors wear out over time. It’s a common issue and an easy fix for a pro. If your outdoor unit is completely unresponsive, don’t force it. Just call an HVAC tech to take a look safely.

Reason #7: Duct Problems

Sometimes your AC works fine, but the air just isn’t reaching certain rooms. That’s often a duct issue.
